Safflower seed can be used as a good substitute for black oil sunflower seed in an effort to keep unwanted birds such as grackles and starlings and even squirrels away from the feeder. Much like black oil sunflower seed, safflower seed is high in protein and fat; It’s a huge hit with cardinals and a numerous others. See our feeding chart below. We suggest to mix the safflower with the black oil for a bit and gradually move to all safflower during the effort to change seed types.
